John Nelson, a native of New York City, has
been performing as a professional drummer and percussionist for nearly two decades.
John studied African Hand Drums with Nigerian master drummer, Babatunde Olotungi
in the 70s. After spending one year in the University of Hawaii's music program
studying percussion John moved on to protege with jazz drummers Tony Williams
and Allen Nelson. Known as el john, he has recently completed a U.S. tour with
ESL recording artist Federico Aubelle and a world tour with Thievery Corporation.
el john is a founding member of the collective, Poi Dog Pondering and has recorded
extensively with a variety of acclaimed artists including Penelope Houston, James
McMurtry, and Victor Krumenacher (Camper Van Beethoven).
el john has recently returned to Austin to continue his pursuits as a
performer and private instructor.
